Biography

Kirk Carter has worked as a radio announcer, television producer, cellular engineer, web designer and developer, and photographer. His photography work includes several shows, a prize here and there, and 3 books. He has taught photography classes in everything from exposure to composition, and started the NRV Exposure photography group. All that should have worn him out by now, but he has recently begun drawing comics and designing games. In 2015 he designed a Zine Maker Space for the Christiansburg Library. In his art, Kirk considers the intentional and unintentional meanings of signs, stories, objects and icons.

Artist Statement

I’m exploring the meanings and connotations of objects: the semiotics of commonplace items. This long-term project began with photographs showing evidence of active intent or neglect, such as peeling and redacted signs. Most recently I’ve photographed pavement markings and overspray, evidence of action with intentional and unintentional meanings. My comics assemblages play on our automatic assumptions by presenting an unexpected take on what ordinary objects mean. The Angel Chair is another in that series, a commonplace object modified to evoke something new while retaining its original nature.
